The Academy of Performing and Visual Arts students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a comprehensive curriculum that spans the performing arts, including music, dance, and theater, as well as the visual arts, such as painting, sculpture, and digital media.
The AFJROTC program is grounded in the Air Force core values of “integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do.”
The program encourages the development of self-reliance, discipline, leadership, and respect for a democratic society. The students have the opportunity to participate in various field trips, summer programs, and leadership positions.
The Business Academy learning center (which includes Sports Management, Virtual Enterprises, and the Academy of Finance) is a four-year program that offers students an engaging and practical introduction to the world of business. It empowers students with essential knowledge and skills needed to succeed in today's competitive and rapidly changing business landscape.
The Career Skills learning center is designed to support our students' knowledge of digital marketing, social media marketing, and introduction to civil service work; which may include information on select union jobs, construction work, and military work.
Digital Communications at Susan E. Wagner High School will prepare students for the demands of an ever changing digital world and media environment. In this Learning Center, students will develop the fundamentals for journalism, digital mass media, and production. Our courses are designed to be culturally responsible and student centered, culminating in an advanced course with real world applications and productions. The wide variety of courses offered allow for a holistic understanding of contemporary communication and the digital world.
The Future Teacher Academy Learning Center will prepare students who aspire to become educators. Students will have the opportunity to explore the teaching profession by engaging in educational courses, college visits, mentoring, peer teaching, and student teaching experiences.
The Institute for Law and Politics introduces students to the study of law and the American government. The courses focus on building critical thinking and communication skills, and introduces students to the varied career opportunities in the fields of law and justice.
The Institute of Medicine aims to provide students with exposure through classroom study and experiential learning to elements of the medical field. Partnerships with community, medical and research organizations will offer students the foundational and practical experiences needed for this career path. This Learning Center provides students with lessons and skills geared towards human anatomy and life-saving techniques. Students who successfully complete this track will be CPR and First Aid certified, thus providing the opportunity to become a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
Students with outstanding academic ability may apply to our Scholars Academy. Once accepted into our prestigious academy, students are enrolled in courses which emphasize inquiry, critical thinking and research skills. An interdisciplinary approach to ideas and concepts guides participants through a comprehensive and challenging exploration of culture and heritage using the resources of NYC as an extension of our school. Courses included in the eight term sequence include Advanced Placement, College Now, and St. John’s University classes in all of the traditional academic disciplines. In addition, students will choose to join one of our specialized tracks in either the arts, humanities or STEM. The academy requires six semesters in a full scholars program for a Scholars transcript designation.
