Your Challenge: Design and build a chain reaction machine using materials found at home.
Grade 2 Project
Students will create a chain reaction machine project at home. A chain reaction is a series of connected events when one action causes the next to happen. Students will design and build a small chain reaction machine with at least 3 events, using mostly reused or recyclable materials found at home (such as paper, cups, books, spoons, small toys, cardboard, rulers, etc.).
Students have the choice to work independently or in groups of 2 to 4. If choosing to work in groups, families will need to coordinate groups on their own, because this project will be completed outside of school hours. The project should fit on a surface about the size of a box lid (12in x 18in) and no larger than (24.5in x 36.5in). Commercial kits should NOT be purchased or used! This project encourages creativity, problem solving, and sustainability by using everyday materials.
Through this project, students will practice the Engineering Design Process (Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Improve) and explore how pushes / pulls create energy and motion.
P.S./I.S. 229’s STEAM Expo will take place on Wednesday, February 25th. All students are required to participate. Everyone will receive a grade.
