PBIS is a school-wide approach that helps to establish behavior supports in an effort to create a positive, safe and inclusive learning environment, therefore maximizing student success. Students can earn kindness points for demonstrating behaviors aligned to our core values: kindness, integrity, respect, empathy and excellence. Each week students are able to redeem their points for fun prizes!
As you're walking through the hallway at PS 176, you might just find yourself jumping, leaping, or scooting sideways thanks to our sensory pathways! These guided paths give our students the opportunity to spend a few minutes each day jumping, bouncing, crawling and blowing off steam. Sensory pathways are helpful with self-regulation and strengthening motor skills.
Many of our classrooms have designated serenity centers or a safe space in the classroom for all students to utilize when their emotions are running too high. Serenity centers are equipped with tools for guided self-regulation including bean bags, breathing visuals, fidgets, drawing tools, music and timers.
Have you ever found yourself repeating positive things in an effort to work through a tough time? Did you say it enough that you believed it? Positive affirmations are a powerful tool to combat negative thoughts and allow us to persevere through challenges. Research has shown that consistent use of positive affirmations in schools are correlated with a more positive mindset, therefore increasing academic success. The entire school participates in Affirmation Tuesday in which affirmations are introduced and repeated during morning announcements. Give it a try:
I will be kind to everyone. I am a good friend. I am helpful. I treat others how I want to be treated.
My voice matters!
My happiness is up to me.
I can make a difference.
Today, I am a leader.
IS 201's SEAL Team visits PS 176!
Members of the Dyker Heights Intermediate School Social Emotional Awareness Leadership (SEAL) Team visited 4th grade classes to discuss kindness. The SEAL team explained kindness and all that it encompasses. Students discussed acts of kindness and its impact on the world. Our 4th graders enjoyed playing KIndness Bingo and loved their coloring books created by the SEAL team!
