The Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID is a username and password that is required to log in and access all Federal Student Aid websites, including the FAFSA.
The FSA ID also serves as a legal signature when you submit your FAFSA.
If you are a student with a social security number, you need to create an FSA ID.
One or both of your parents must create an FSA ID in order to complete the FAFSA.
If you have a sibling who attended college before you, your parent may already have an FSA ID. Your parent should use this previously used FSA ID and not create a new one.
If you are an independent student, your parent or legal guardian do not need to create an FSA ID since their financial information will not be used.
If you are a student without a social security number, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO COMPLETE THE FAFSA, so you should not create an FSA ID. Visit this page to see if you are eligible for New York State financial aid or speak with your school counselor regarding financial aid.
Have the following ready before creating the FSA ID:
Full name and social security number, as they appear on the social security card (if applicable)
Date of birth
