Mission Statement
NYC Men Teach is dedicated to uniting men of color committed to educating today’s diverse student population, engaging in each other’s professional and leadership development, and empowering the communities they serve.
Program History
New York City Men Teach (NYCMT) began with the Mayor’s Young Men’s Initiative in 2016. It arose from a significant gap in the representation of males of color teaching in New York City’s public and charter schools and prioritizes diversifying the teaching force by recruiting and retaining more men of color to teach in NYC schools. When the program started in 2016 in partnership with the Mayor’s Young Men’s Initiative, male educators who identified as being of color were less than 8% of the teaching force (less than 2% nationally in 2015), while a student body of young men of color that make up 43% of the student population in NYC public schools. The program is a collaboration between the NYC Department of Education, Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Young Men’s Initiative, and the City University of New York.

"Men Teach supported me as a mentor by providing me with the opportunity to mentor first and second year teachers. Also, with the mentoring meetings I was able to practice new techniques that I have used with my mentees. What I really enjoy is role playing during these meetings. This allows me to reflect on some of my practices and where I can improve. "
Mr. G., Facilitator and Mentor
"My mentoring experience with my anchors in the NYC Men Teach program has been both rewarding and insightful. It has been great to build relationships with them, providing guidance, support, and resources as they navigate their teaching journeys. Seeing their growth, resilience, and commitment to education—especially in the face of challenges—has been inspiring."
Mr. R., Mentor
"My mentor's approach is very supportive and empathic. He addressed many possible solutions and possible roadblocks."
Mr. Q., Anchor
"With being a first year teacher, classroom management is key, and I received very strong insight on how to perfect my classroom management. Also, as I needed to figure out a unit, my mentor helped scaffold and help me understand assignments to administer."
