IS 73 School Library - EJK Bookmaking

This year our school will be participating in the Ezra Jack Keats Bookmaking Competition. This competition is a citywide competition with one city winner for grades 6-8, one Queens winner for grades 6-8 and one school winner from each school participating.

We are so excited to begin our bookmaking competition! Please either meet with Ms. Higgins in the library on Thursday mornings or during open library periods for your academy so you can create your books.

There are linked tutorial videos for you to reference if need be so that you can get support in what you need to plan.

Finding Your Story: Writing What you Know

The first step is picking the genre and topic that you want to write about.

Story Arc: Beginning, Middle & End

A story needs need to be linear or circular. It should have a beginning, middle and end. These should be mapped out before you begin to write.

Pacing & Paginating Text

Be aware of which words are going on which pages and if there will be pages with no words on it. Make sure it makes sense to the pacing and structure of the story.

Material, Media & Method

There will be different materials that you can use to create your book. Please think about what you may need. We will provide you with the majority of the paper.

Planning Your Visual Story

There should be a plan in place for what types of pictures support your text. Pictures should show what the words may not be showing.

Collage, Finishing Your Art & Book Binding

Many times we judge a book by its cover when picking what we may want to read. Think about what shows the essence of your book and what will catch a readers eye.
