I guess I knew that I wanted to be a teacher when I was 7 years old. I can remember sitting in my second grade class, and my teacher Mrs. Rosen was absent. The substitute that was teaching, in my opinion was teaching all wrong. I thought to myself “If I were teaching this, I would do it differently and maybe more importantly, better.”

I knew I wanted to teach math when I was in middle school (the age you are now). Math was my favorite subject. I’m not sure if it was my favorite subject because I was good at it or because I loved my math teachers. Mrs. Rhett, Mrs. Healy, Mr. Sheedy, Ms. Katz were the names of some of my math teachers. For some reason you never forget the names of the teachers that you felt connected to.

When I was in high school, I was very active in the school band, school play, soccer, student government and several afterschool clubs. Again, I developed relationships with several teachers that I will never forget. When I was applying to colleges, there was no doubt that it was my calling to become an educator, not just because I always knew that, that's what I wanted to do, but to repay all of my teachers that gave their all to me and helped shape my life. I was going to Pay it Forward!

Now almost 20 years later, I have a job that I love more than I ever knew I could. I became a principal because I love being a teacher. As a teacher, you make an impact on the students in your classroom. As a principal, I make an impact on the students in my school.. As a teacher, I was responsible for roughly 90 students. Now, as a principal, I impact over 300 students. Not only do I have a chance to make a difference in the lives of the students but I also impact their families and the entire school community. Being able to team up with other educators to make a difference in the lives of our students is an experience that I will always appreciate. The role of principal allows me to spread my reach further and touch more lives than I did as a teacher.

Supongo que sabía que quería ser maestro cuando tenía 7 años. Puedo recordar sentarme en mi clase de segundo grado, y mi maestra Sra. Rosen estuvo ausente. El sustituto que estaba enseñando, en mi opinión, era enseñar todo mal. Pensé para mí mismo “Si yo enseñara esto, lo haría de manera diferente y tal vez más importante, mejor”.

Sabía que quería enseñar matemáticas cuando estaba en la escuela media (la edad en la que está ahora). Las matemáticas fueron mi tema favorito. No estoy seguro de si era mi tema favorito porque era bueno en él o porque amaba a mis profesores de matemáticas. La Sra. Rhett, la Sra. Healy, el Sr. Sheedy, la Sra. Katz fueron los nombres de algunos de mis maestros de matemáticas. Por alguna razón nunca olvidas los nombres de los maestros a los que te sentías conectado.

Cuando yo estaba en la escuela secundaria, yo estaba muy activo en la banda escolar, el juego escolar, el fútbol, el gobierno estudiantil y varios clubes después de clases. Una vez más, desarrollé relaciones con varios maestros que nunca olvidaré. Cuando solicitaba a las universidades, no había duda de que era mi llamado a ser educador, no sólo porque siempre lo sabía, eso es lo que quería hacer, sino para pagar a todos mis maestros que me dieron todo y ayudaron a dar forma a mi vida. ¡Voy a pagar adelante!

Ahora casi 20 años más tarde, tengo un trabajo que amo más de lo que nunca sabía que podía. Me convertí en director porque me encanta ser maestro. Como maestro, usted tiene un impacto en los estudiantes en su salón de clases. Como director, hago un impacto en los estudiantes de mi escuela. Como maestro, fui responsable de aproximadamente 90 estudiantes. Ahora, como director, impacto a más de 300 estudiantes. No sólo tengo la oportunidad de hacer una diferencia en las vidas de los estudiantes, sino que también impacto a sus familias y a toda la comunidad escolar. Ser capaz de formar equipo con otros educadores para hacer una diferencia en las vidas de nuestros estudiantes es una experiencia que siempre apreciaré. El papel de director me permite extender mi alcance más allá y tocar más vidas que yo como maestro.
