Before there were machines to do complex mathematical calculations in the blink of an eye, people had to do it by hand. The people who worked on this kind of thing were very talented and skilled but did not usually get the acclaim they deserved. They worked together in teams to complete different parts of a calculation, then often swapped findings to check each other’s work. At NASA, women had to do all the math and science calculations for aircraft and space missions. From 1935 to 1942 more women began to work at NACA because many men volunteered to be in the war. The women that worked for NASA were often called "Human Computers". Examples of things they would ‘compute’ include working out formulas relating to nuclear fission or trigonometry.

Antes de que existieran máquinas para hacer cálculos matemáticos complejos en un abrir y cerrar de ojos, la gente tenía que hacerlo a mano.
