Come and join our innovative research project aimed at mitigating the challenges posed by sea-level rise due to climate change
What is the Urban Shorelines Protection STEM Workshop?
After months of planning, the inaugural ERHS Urban Shoreline Protection STEM Workshop for middle school students, led by ElRo students, is finally underway! The aim of this workshop is to inspire middle school students in New York City to explore the complex issue of sea level rise due to climate change, encourage them to participate in real-world projects, and ignite their interest in STEM. The workshop has been thoughtfully crafted to enable students to acquire leadership skills, develop their design thinking abilities, work collaboratively as a team, and exercise initiative in an engaging and enjoyable competitive environment.
What will you learn?
During this workshop, students will gain an in-depth understanding of the consequences of climate change and its effects on our environment. They will actively participate in mitigating the impacts of sea-level rise by designing physical seawall models that can protect urban shorelines. The workshop will cover modern seawall design principles and simulation tools, exploring various engineering design parameters to create effective seawalls. Through hands-on learning, students will design, construct and test their seawall models using the wave tank facility created by our team. The workshop will also provide a competitive platform where students can collaborate and compete as teams. By the end of the workshop, students will have acquired valuable skills and knowledge that they can apply to real-world challenges.
