Note-taking is essential for this task because it helps students keep track of what a character is like, what they do, and what happens because of it. Jotting down notes while reading helps to stay focused and think about the story as it happens — this is called active reading. Taking notes helps to understand people’s thoughts, feelings, and actions. This builds empathy and helps students see how characters reflect real-life struggles and choices. It’s an important skill for 8th grade, high school, and beyond because it helps build upon an understanding of humanity.
