Dodge, Burn & Sponge Tool
1. Assignment Goals (March 28)
SWBAT:
• use the BURN tool to DARKEN areas
• use the DODGE tool to LIGHTEN areas
• use the SPONGE tool to SATURATE areas
• use advanced SELECTION techniques to CONTROL burning, dodging, and sponging
• achieve the SAME EFFECTS as shown in the SAMPLE by following the DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY
(See Rubric Below)
2. Download and Rename File (March 28)
Rename it by adding a SPACE followed by your LAST name and first name followed by the file extension
Example:
Burn Dodge Saturate Hooker Martina.psd
3. Duplicate Layer (March 28)
1. Duplicate the layer

4. Burn Shadows in Dog (March 28)
1. Select the Burn Tool (It may be hidden under the Dodge or the Sponge Tool
2. Set the Options as follows:
Brush Size.........90
Hardness...........0
Range..............Midtones
Exposure...........25
3. Click and drag with the Burn Tool over the shadows in the dog to make them darker for more contrast
5. Dodge Highlights in Nose and Eyes (March 28)
1. Select the Dodge Tool (It may be hidden under the Burn or the Sponge Tool
2. Set the Options as follows:
Brush Size..........8
Hardness............0
Range...............Shadows
Exposure............100
3. Click and drag with the Dodge Tool on the nose and eyes to create highlights. See sample left.
6. Select Dog & Saturate it (March 28)
1. Use the Polygonal Lasso tool to make a marching ant selection around the dog
2. Select the SPONGE TOOL (it may be hidden under the DODGE TOOL)
3. Set the OPTONS as follows
Brush Size..........500
Hardness............0
Mode................Saturate
Flow................50
4. Click and drag with the sponge tool to saturate the colors in the dog.
Try to make it even. Undo and redo until you are happy with the results.
7. Darken the Sky & Sand with Burning (March 28)
1. Use the SELECT INVERSE option in the SELECT MENU
2. Select the BURN TOOL (it may be hidden under the SPONGE TOOL)
3. Set the OPTIONS as follows
Brush Size...........900
Hardness.............0
Range................Midtones
Exposure.............25
4. Click and drag with the DODGE tool to darken the sand and the sky.
8. Find and Add Your Own Image (March 29)
Search for an image on the Internet. Choose something that interests you.
Copy and paste the image into your Dodge Burn Sponge file and scale it down (if needed) so it fits on your canvas. Don't forget to hold shift to lock the proportions.
9. Duplicate the layer (March 29)
Option drag the layer of your pasted image UP to the TOP of the layers panel to make a copy so you can show your before and after work.
Position the copy so it is on top of the layers panel (See left)
10. Use The 3 Tools From this Lesson (March 29)
Choose an area to darken, lighten, or saturate/desaturate on the top layer that you just duplicated. .
Review sections above if you need to review how the tools work.
Rename the duplicated internet image layer (it should be on top) with the name of the tool you are going to use.
Make the the change to the layer you just renamed
5. Duplicate the last layer you worked on by option dragging it up.
6. Rename the duplicated layer with the next tool you are going to use.
7. Edit the layer with the tool.
8. Continue the process until you have used the 3 different tools covered in this assignment. Be sure to name each layer as you go.
Assessment
45 PTS: The provided image was edited exactly as directed in the lesson. The SAME EFFECTS as shown in the SAMPLE were achieved because the DIRECTIONS were followed CAREFULLY
50 PTS: A second image was edited with at the 3 tools covered in this lesson
5 PTS: Work was done in a timely fashion

Edit a second internet image
A good practice when doing destructive editing on a PS file is to make a copy of the layer first.
