What do School Leaders Do?

School Leaders create sustainable and scalable structures that will empower their students to explore computer science, learn how it connects to their community, and affirm their roles in CS. They build a CS School Team to help their school community understand what Computer Science is, why it is important for their school, and how it might be implemented.

To support School Leaders in working with their CS School team’s, administrators have the opportunity to join professional development sessions and access to key resources (i.e. CS Implementation Plan) to support their strategic planning. As the CS School Teams grow, teacher leaders have the opportunity to join professional development sessions and access to key resources (i.e. CS School Lead Workbook) to build activities and plans that would support their school’s CS Implementation Plan

About CS4All:

In the fall of 2015, Mayor Bill de Blasio and Chancellor Carmen Fariña announced an ambitious set of goals for New York City schools: by 2026, 80% of our students will graduate high school on time, and two-thirds of our students will be college ready.

There are eight initiatives that comprise the Equity and Excellence agenda that will ensure all students receive a world-class education and have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Computer Science For All (CS4All) is one of these Equity and Excellence initiatives.

By 2025, CS4All will ensure all NYC public school students learn computer science, with an emphasis on female, Black, and Latinx students. Through our work, students will be better prepared to utilize CS during their K-12 experience and after graduation.

Ron Summers is the Executive Director of CS Education for the NYCDOE.

Frequently Asked Questions:

How to build a CS Team?

Identifying and building a CS School Team is essential to having a sustainable and scalable school CS program. When you solidify your school’s CS vision, think of all the diverse stakeholders that can support that vision and who’ve expressed a vested interest. Stakeholders may include administrators, teachers, single points of contact (SPOCs), guidance counselors, parent coordinators, community members - anyone who can support the planning and rollout of your school’s CS vision. Start with a discussion to align needs, wants, and expectations for CS implementation and secure planning time for the CS School Team to continue to build off of those discussions to plan, prototype and evaluate the implementation of your school’s CS vision. More information can be found on our blueprint.
