core belief system

As educators, it is our job to create the optimal setting to facilitate learning based on our knowledge of our students and their abilities. At Aveyron Academy, we nurture a culture of respect and encourage all members of our community to challenge the status quo.

We believe that the best way to enhance instruction is by emphasizing close reading of informational texts, stressing higher order thinking, and developing deep understandings in all subjects. As our students work towards post-secondary readiness, they must have the opportunity to engage in rigorous thought through collaboration, analysis, and synthesis.

History of aveyron Academy

Victor of Aveyron (1788 - 1828) grew up isolated from human contact in a southern region of France. When he was taken in by the authorities as a young teenager, it was quickly determined that this child had no experience with human care, and none of the social or linguistic skills expected in a child raised in a community setting. He was considered intellectually and physically delayed.

His case was taken on by physician Jean-Marc Gaspard Itard. It was Dr. Itard who named Victor and spent the next five years developing strategies to teach Victor and systematically monitor the young boy's progress.

Dr. Itard's research and methodologies changed education worldwide and shed light on how to rehabilitate developmentally delayed children. It is in honor of this extraordinary story, our school is named Aveyron Academy.
