First Day Project: Create a "visual autobiography" name plate to introduce yourself.

- A piece of cardstock or bristol paper (at least 12" x 18")
- Sketchbook or paper for brainstorming
- Permanent markers (fine-point and chisel-tip)
- Coloring supplies (colored pencils, markers, or paint)

- Brainstorm your ideas. In your sketchbook, write down a list of your interests, hobbies, and favorite things.
- Sketch your layout. Sketch your name in pencil on the larger paper. Experiment with different styles of lettering, like block or bubble letters.
- Integrate your symbols. Incorporate drawings or symbols from your brainstorm list into the letters of your name or in the space around your name. For example, if you like music, maybe one of your letters can look like a guitar.
- Outline and color. Once you are happy with your design, outline your final sketch with a permanent marker. Add bright, bold colors to make your name plate stand out.
- Answer the "why." On the back of your name plate, write a few sentences answering the question: "How does this name plate represent who you are?". This is a great way to help your classmates and me get to know you better.
