Q&A
Q: Who was Dr. Maria Montessori?
A: Dr. Maria Montessori was an Italian physician, educator, and innovator, acclaimed for her educational method that builds on the way children learn naturally.
Q: Are we a regular NYC Public School?
A: Yes, we are! We are a new NYC Public School opening in September of 2024 and we are governed by the same Chancellor’s Regulations and expectations. The difference will be that our school will follow a Montessori approach and align all its beliefs and practices as closely as possible.
Q: What does learning look like in Montessori?
A: The classroom is designed so that children can explore through hands-on learning, collaboration and self-directed learning. The teacher offers materials and activities that are developmentally appropriate through the various areas around the classroom and will challenge them to explore, wonder and think critically.
Q: Will teachers be Montessori certified?
A: Our goal is to hire Montessori certified teachers and provide ongoing training and professional learning to all staff in the Montessori model. We are required to comply with all hiring/licensure guidelines as outlined by NYS, NYC and the UFT.
Q: Why Montessori?
A: Known for individually paced learning and fostering independence, the Montessori Method also encourages empathy, a passion for social justice, and a joy in lifelong learning. Given the freedom and support to question, to probe deeply, and to make connections. Children become confident, enthusiastic, self-directed learners.
Q: What grades will we start with?
A: We will open with only pre-K and kindergarten classes and go up to 5th grade, growing a grade every year. Our goal is to have mixed-aged classrooms so entering kindergarten and pre-k children will be together in one of our 4 classes.
Q: Will we have an after school program?
A: As of right now, we do not have an after school program in place but we are working to try to secure an after school partnership as we know that after school care is very important to many families.
Q: Does the school have an outdoor space?
A: We have a small rooftop outdoor play space as well an indoor gymnatorium where children will engage in gross motor activity. Fortunately, our school is right next to a new public park, Abolitionist Place which our children will have direct access to.
