NYC Reads: Updated Guidance and Outdated Book and Materials Recycling
Please review the information below and take appropriate action.
Updated Guidance (all schools): As a follow-up to the August 15 edition of Principals Digest, please note that NYC Reads Guidance & Resources, K–5 has been updated to include guidance on the following ELA practices: independent reading, small group instruction, assessment, and curriculum pacing for Wit & Wisdom and EL Education. For questions, email literacycollaborative@schools.nyc.gov.
Books and Materials Recycling (NYC Reads Phase 1 schools): Schools that are participating in phase 1 of NYC Reads and adopting a new curriculum should recycle their outdated curricular materials, including posters, signage and other classroom resources supporting practices not aligned to the science of reading (e.g., three-cueing, overuse of context clues, text-leveling guidance). Note that books/texts from leveled libraries and guided reading kits can be added to classroom libraries and arranged by genre or theme for students to check out; they can also be utilized to create text sets aligned to topics or themes in the current curriculum. When recycling materials, please note the following:
Books should never be placed on the curb by your school.
Outdated and no longer needed softcover books should be placed in regular paper recycling on scheduled days of MWF.
Outdated and no longer needed hardcover books must have the interior pages removed from the binding. The interior pages should then be placed in regular paper recycling. The hardcover bindings can be placed in the trash.
