At School Lane, we have many staff members who encourage many of the students to work harder and aid them in the right direction. Ms. Hewitt is always there for us when we need her. She is the vice principal of 11 & 12 grade and we always see her walking in the hallways, checking in on classrooms, and making sure everything is in order. We don’t know much about her so let's get to know her together about just where she came from and some fun facts about her job!
Before coming to work for School Lane Ms. Hewitt was a social worker for many years. She worked in New York and the programs that they had. She also worked with the elderly and ill people. She moved to Pennsylvania, went back to school, and got her undergraduate degree in history. She started working in Allentown teaching history for 10 years. She also taught in some local colleges. She then became vice principal at a different school for 5 years before coming to School Lane. This is her 5th year as a vice principal at School Lane. Ms. Hewitt does not regret taking on the vice principal role because it gives her a challenge and she gets the opportunity to spend more time with the students. Ms. Hewitt’s favorite part of being vice principal is the students. She hated online school because everyone was online. She could never see the students in person one-on-one which sucked. She felt as if she was cut off from the students.
If there was any other career Ms. Hewitt would have done other than teaching at a school she would have done something related to journalism. She wanted to go to Colombia for a graduate program, how cool is that? Being able to go to another country to learn and accomplish something. Even though she is a vice principal doesn’t mean she has not accomplished many other important things.
As we know Ms. Hewitt came from another school which had a strict dress code. And we also know many students complain about wearing sweats and a hoodie as a uniform. I wonder what our vice principal has to say about this? Ms. Hewitt says that we need to create norms on how to make our space better. Change can happen, students need to voice their opinions and bring forward proposals for something to happen. At School Lane, the students designed the hoodies and made them work with Ms. Shade.
Now for the juiciest drama that Ms. Hewitt had to deal with. Back at her old school, she used to teach in Allentown. Two high school girls had beef with each other. Ms. Hewitt spent a whole week working with the girls and their families. They even called in the Allentown police to come talk to the girls and their mothers. Ms. Hewitt thought everything had settled down until they ended up creating a brawl in the parking lot. People were jumping in because they wanted to defend their cousin, and others jumped in to defend their sister. In the end, many students ended up getting expelled and they called the police to break up the fight.
I have learned a lot from Ms. Hewitt and her experiences through the years. I think this profile on our vice principal of School Lane has showed us the things that could happen with time; change careers, explore new challenging things, move to a new place. I think Ms. Hewitt is a great vice principal who has seen things like no other. Her great personality creates a safe space for her students to come and to support.
