On June 30th, 2023, rap artist Lil Uzi Vert released his latest album “Pink Tape.” This is a different genre than what we’re used to from Uzi. This album includes songs under the genre of heavy metal with rap included. We see this specifically when he samples the song “Chop Suey” by the heavy metal band System of a Down in his song “CS.” He also added some older singles to this album, such as “Just Wanna Rock” and “Endless Fashion” featuring Nicki Minaj. Uzi took this album on tour on October 21st in Minnesota.
I attended the show in Philadelphia at the Wells Fargo Center on November 22nd, 2023. I am very familiar with this venue. If you’re a hockey or basketball fan, you may already be familiar with this stadium. The guest experience here was nice with big bathrooms and food places open, such as Chickie and Petes and other stands that sell burgers, dogs, soda, and popcorn. My group only bought two large sodas, although be advised: just two sodas were around 20 dollars, so bring some cash if you plan on eating there. If you plan on attending an event at Wells Fargo, we had seats in row 14, section 128, seats 1 and 2. I personally believe these were very good seats for a reasonable price for how close we were without being in the pit.
Moving on to the start of the event, this concert did not technically have any opening acts. The performance before the show was done by DJpforreal. This is Lil Uzi Vert's personal DJ and I believe he did exactly what an opening act was supposed to do. He interacted with the crowd, played songs relevant to the event, and even had a giveaway for people in the crowd (no idea who won but it wasn't me). All these aspects included getting the crowd excited before the show started and getting them singing and dancing to prepare them for the real thing, which was in about 30 minutes. Once again, I think he did an amazing job.
When Uzi came out, he started off the show with his song “Suicide Doors,” which is on the Pink Tape album. It was not exactly the song I was expecting as the starter but the crowd was excited that he was finally on stage. He did not play every song in the new album but did play songs on there like “Flooded the Face,” “x2,” and “Fire Alarm,” as well as the singles including “Endless Fashion” and “Just Wanna Rock.” He also played some of his older songs such as “Neon Guts,” “20 Minutes,” “New Patek,” and “XO TOUR Llif3.” This concert had a demonic or satanic vibe to it. There was an inflatable demon head, lots of smoke, and different colored lights throughout the show.
By the end of the show, DJpforreal started playing more Uzi songs to keep the crowd going while Uzi got a little sip of water. When he came back on stage, he began tearing apart his set behind him, signing it and throwing it into the crowd. It didn't go too far as I think it was only cardboard or foam, so you had to have good seats to have this special memory of a great concert. The very last thing he signed was a t-shirt. I'm not sure what was on it, probably some type of his merch, but the problem with this item was that when he was done signing it, he said, “I'm gonna give this to someone in the crowd.” He meant this very literally as he exited the stage and began walking amongst the crowd. I personally don't think this was a very good idea and I think security would agree. I could no longer see the seats or the floor. All I could see were fans flying up over the crowd due to security throwing them. You could also see multiple fights occurring between security and the fans. If I were not 5 '4 and 110 pounds, I would have 100% been one of the fans trying to get as close as possible to one of my favorite artists. Very jealous of those who were able to get a picture next to him.
Although I didn't get a picture next to one of my favorite artists, I do think this concert was an amazing experience. Between the setup of the music, food for sale, and it being a seated concert, I had an amazing time. I highly recommend any events held at Wells Fargo and if Lil Uzi Vert ever comes back to Philly, I highly recommend investing to go see him if you're a fan of his music.
