About Stone Soup

There are many versions of the Stone Soup story,

but the message is always the same:

sharing a meal brings people together.

by Jess Stockholm

Start with a pot of boiling water. Add a round, smooth stone.

Add a little salt, maybe some parsley, and a carrot or two.

Drop in a dash of pepper and an onion.

Share with the community.

One pot full of water set to boil. Put a round, gray stone into the pot.

It may cook faster with onions and smell better with carrots.

It would taste better with beef bones, but would be fit for a prince with salt and pepper.

Add butter and barley to make it thick and rich.

Set the table and eat together!

Heat up a large pot of water and add three round , smooth stones.

Any soup needs salt and pepper and carrots make it even better.

If you have cabbage, add that.

Beef and potatoes make soup richer. Barley and milk make it even fancier!

Celebrate the banquet with a loaf of bread and some cider.

Fill a pot with water and heat it up. Throw in an ordinary stone.

Make it better by adding a carrot and maybe a potato.

It would be lovelier with green beans, corn, or noodles. Or celery, parsley, pepper, or turnips.

Perhaps a mushroom or green pepper too?

Share your soup and celebrate this "nutritious, delicious, incredible, edible" feast!

Gather three round, smooth stones and place them in a pot of water.

Season with salt and pepper.

Sweeten the broth with carrots.

Make it better with onion.

Add some mushrooms, noodles, pea pods, and cabbages.

You could even add dumplings, bean curd. Or cloud ear, mung beans, or yams. Or taro root, winter melon, and baby corn. Or garlic, ginger rout, soy sauce, lily buds.

Gather together and sit down to eat.

Dig a hole in the ground and line it with banana leaves.

Build a fire next to the hole.

Find a fish stone, a vegetable stone, an egg stone and throw them into the fire.

Use bamboo bowls to fill the hole with water.

Blow on the stones and add them to the water.
