Before reading, take a “Book Walk” - Point out the title and author. Look at the picture on the cover and ask, "What do you think is going to happen in this story? Why?" This will help your child set purpose for reading.
"Retell"
After reading - Ask your child to retell the story from the beginning, and ask for opinions, too. "What was your favorite part? Would you recommend this to a friend?"
"Right There"
Ask some "right there" questions. These are questions that are easily answered because of the way the author/illustrator wrote the story.
Who were the characters?
What was the setting?
What happened?
When did this take place?
Sequence the events of the story:
First, then, next, last
"Conflict Chat"
Discuss the conflict in the story. Who or What caused it? Was it resolved? How? How would the story have changed if the conflict was left unresolved? Could it have been resolved differently/better?
"Think and Search"
Summarize what you read.
What was the problem? What caused the problem?
Compare and contrast two characters .
Compare and contrast a character to you, to mom, to dad, etc.
Find an example of… (Character feelings, a conflict, a resolution)
Create alternate endings to the story. How would this change the story?
"Stop and Think"
What was the main idea?
What could a different title for this story be and why?
