Crew Approach

What is Crew?

Crew is our school's approach to community-building! Developed by the non-profit EL Education (formerly Expeditionary Learning), crew encourages all members of the school community to be active participants in their own learning and relationships at school, rather than passengers. On a ship, every member of the crew has something to contribute. Crew activities are designed to build relationships between crew leaders (teachers and staff) and students as well as between students in different classes and age groups.

We develop crew activities to incorporate both active, hands-on learning through team-building games and initiatives as well as small group discussions on habits of character. For example, one activity asked students to create a "complement train." Each member of the group could only move the train forward when the other group members were giving positive feedback and complements. In another activity, students sat together with a crew leader and discussed the topic "What makes a good classmate?"

Students and staff participate in crew activities three times a week. These one-hour time periods give students opportunities to meet with peers from other classes. Our goal as a school community is to build relationships and encourage habits of character, specifically within the Learn at Morse Hill Learner Framework. Crew encourages students to become more self-aware, build communication skills, and grow habits of inquiry and exploration.
