Step 1: Select a Proper Location

• The primary step is to search for a suitable location where there is enough space and natural light present. If one wants to do vertical farming indoors then artificial light is needed. For indoors places like an empty room or garage can be used. For outdoors, a balcony can be used to carry out vertical farming.

Step 2: Build or Acquire a Growing Structure

• Choose a suitable structure to build your vertical farm which can be made using robust materials like wood or PVC pipes. Pre-made gardening kits for vertical farming can also be used as an alternative. Please ensure after setting up that the structure is well-built and capable to hold the weight of plants or any additional equipment like irrigation channels and LED lights if required.

Step 3: Select Your Growing Medium

• It is vital to choose a clean growing medium for plants. Clay pellets or rockwools are used to provide support to plants' roots while allowing nutrients and water uptake.

Step 4: Set Up Your Irrigation System

• A plastic tube can be connected to a water pipe and it should be placed in such a way that it provides sufficient water and nutrients to every plant. Also make sure that the quantities are right to avoid overwatering or excess nutrients for crops.

Step 5: Install Grow Lights (If Needed)

• If vertical farming is done indoors then you will have to install artificial lights that provide proper energy for plant to grow. However one will have to make sure to keep the lights at a suitable distance such that the crops don't die due to excess heat.

Step 6: Choose and Plant Your Crops

• Choose the crops you want to grow depending on the space you have. Accordingly, favourable conditions like optimum temperature, light intensity and space requirements can be arranged for.

Step 7: Monitor and Maintain Your Vertical Farm

• Vertical farming comes with a lot of patience and dedication towards the crops! So it is vital to regularly monitor the environmental conditions temperature, etc. Also, look out for any pests or diseases and address any issues immediately.
