PENCIL GRADES
Conté and Hardtmuth had both discovered that by varying the ratio of graphite to clay, you could produce pencils of varying softness and darkness. The more graphite was in the mixture, the softer and darker the pencil would be. The more clay was added, the harder and lighter the mark it would make.

EXAMPLES OF ART USING 2-POINT PERSPECTIVE
Charles Sheeler – American Landscape (1930)
This Precisionist painting uses two-point perspective to depict industrial architecture, showing how geometry and clarity of form can convey modernity.
COLLABORATIVE 2-POINT PERSPECTIVE:
as a class, lay out a 2-point perspective of a cityscape: use 2 vanishing points, draw in octagonal lines and label each panel. Students will receive one of the 'slices' and fill it in as they like. In the end, like an 'excquisite corpse,' all the panels will be put back together.
REFERENCE REARRANGEMENT
Reference Rearrangment Assignment:
What inspires you?
Is there a painting, a Pinterst image or an artwork that you really love and want to draw in your own way?
Artists often will paint from other painting to learn 'how the soup is made.:'
Skill development: Master copies are a traditional and effective way to improve artistic skills by learning from experienced artists.
Deepen understanding: This process forces you to observe and understand the original artist's choices regarding color, value, and composition, revealing details not initially perceived.
Study techniques and materials: By recreating the work, you can learn about traditional materials and techniques that are different from modern methods.
For this assignment, find one (or more images) that you would like to make your own.
😁I would prefer if students referenced images from our Art Library or from a print out.
If you would like to draw from your phone, tablet or computer please send me your image(s) as I would like to discuss your work as a
class putting the two things, your work and your reference, side-by-side.

END OF TRIMESTER
COLLAGE CONNECTION:
Create a collage by cutting images from magazines, arranging them into an expressive composition, and gluing them down as your base. Afterward, use drawing materials to weave new lines, shapes, and forms through the collage, connecting the images the way Wangechi Mutu and Michael Williams integrate drawing with found materials. Finally, enrich your piece with layered patterns, textures, and visual rhythms inspired by Romare Bearden’s dynamic collage approach.
