Family empowerment  Toolkit

Thank you for your willingness to enhance family engagement initiatives within your school community!

We encourage all of your teachers to utilize and adapt various documents within our toolkit site to meet the specific needs of their classrooms. The ultimate aim is for educators to discover at least one piece of information or structure that helps them better engage with families.

It's important to note that this toolkit was created to enhance family engagement at the school level, so most suggestions, frameworks, and tools were developed with this focus in mind. Principals and staff are still encouraged to leverage the PTA/PTSO, their team of educators, and related resources to support family engagement further.

If you find this toolkit helpful and need additional capacity to implement transformative family empowerment work, please contact Kim to discuss partnership opportunities.

Thank you for stopping by,

Kim and the SchermCo Foundation

Family Empowerment vs. Family Engagement

  • Family Empowerment

      • Family engagement is a shared responsibility in which schools and other community agencies and organizations are committed to reaching out to engage families in meaningful ways and in which families are committed to actively supporting their children’s learning and development (National Family, School, and Engagement Working Group, 2009).

  • Family Engagement

      • Family empowerment is when families are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and dispositions to engage in effective partnerships that support student achievement and development and school improvement (Mapp and Kuttner, 2013).
