ENGLISH 9 & ENGLISH AIS
AIS or Academic Intervention Services are extra supports offered to students as a supplement to the instruction provided in their grade-level English classroom.
The goal of our English AIS program is to improve a student's foundational reading and writing skills. During our time together, students work on a variety of skill-based activities. In addition, they are provided with focused, mentored support in accessing grade-level texts and breaking down writing tasks assigned in their primary English classroom.
The recommendation for support services is determined through several criteria, including state test scores, quarterly and mid-term grades, classroom-based assessments, and our classroom teachers' observations of a student's academic behavior.
In addition, students believed to be in jeopardy of not demonstrating proficiency on state assessments are placed in AIS to increase the likelihood that she/he will be successful in meeting New York State graduation requirements.
In transparency, there is no clear answer for this question. A student will recieve support until she/he demonstrates consistent grade-level proficiencies in English standards. The same factors which identify a student as being in need of academic support are considered when determining whether or not that student is ready to discontinue services.
Students receiving English AIS meet every other day (AC or BD) for a full class period. The intervention time is placed on a student's schedule in lieu of a general study hall.
English AIS is an ungraded component of a student's curriculum. The service exists to augment and support instruction taking place in their English classrooms. I simply ask that students show up ready and willing to work, that they are open to taking academic risks and putting forth their best effort as we work together. My goal is to improve their skills and increase their confidence in themselves as readers, writers, and thinkers so that they can exit this service and readily manage assignments independently.
