Welcome to the Schalmont Middle School's Virtual Open House!
Innovations in Computer Science is an 8th grade elective that explores the ethics of automation and artificial intelligence. Students establish a claim at the beginning of the quarter in response to the question: Does artificial intelligence benefit society/the human race? Throughout the quarter, students read articles, watch videos, engage in programming projects, and discuss this topic/continually adjust their claims as they gather evidence.

At the end of the course, students will present their final claims with supporting evidence gathered throughout the quarter, including their research and hands on experiences with programming robots and programing their own AI systems!

8th Grade open house 2020.mp4This course was inspired by last year's 7th grade students. When discussing robotics and automation in the 7th grade Discovering Computer Science course, students began to debate the value of automation. They asked, are robots really going to be good for our future? Won't they take our jobs? What jobs can we expect to get if AI and robots are being used to do things people do today?

Based on this discussion and a recent IDEA grant that allowed the purchase of circuit boards and motors, this course was born! Students not only learn about programming robotics first hand, they also have the opportunity to discuss the ethical implications of AI and automation and what this means for the future world they will be living in. This course is a literacy based technology course where students read, watch, engage, take notes, write reflections, and develop fully supported claims to express their stances on this interesting and controversial topic.

*Note- this year, to limit contact given current health and safety requirements, we are programming virtual robots.
