Right now, our oceans are home to 5.25 trillion tons of plastic. Thousands of sea creatures like turtles, fish, and even sharks get caught by plastic nets or suffocated by six-pack plastic rings. These days, most packaging from companies like Target and Fresh Market these days has started becoming more sustainable by using more paper and other reusable materials but that's only because of pressure from their customers. This goes to show the power of protesting whats "normal" in order to change the world.
Have you heard of a "carbon footprint?" According to the dictionary, a carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide and other carbon compounds emitted due to the consumption of fossil fuels by a particular person or group. The big factories that produce heating for your neighborhood? They burn fossil fuels. In fact, 29.6 percent of total emissions in the US are caused by the industry sector. The mass population can agree that carbon emissions are caused by factories and governments more than individuals. But that doesn't mean we can't still be mindful about how much we emit everyday.
We understand; you wanna look good. Major fashion brands are designed for you to gaze at their billboards and think, "I need that." But you also have to consider that the plain grey shirt your buying costs $20 and is simultaneously emitting hundreds of thousands of pounds on Co2 into the air from factories that couldn't care less about sustainable creation of clothing. Which is why thrift shopping is so important. If we can thrift more clothing than we buy first hand, your wallet and the planet will be much better off.
