The MUSIC Program at OSS provides students with the opportunity to work together as a team while fostering dedication, perseverance, teamwork, time management, people skills and many other 21st Century soft skills while having fun learning an instrument. Students have the opportunity to play a variety of music (e.g. pop, rock, jazz, classical, musicals, movie themes etc.). Instruments and all necessary equipment is provided to the students as part of their course.
There are many additional experiential opportunities are provided for our students. These have included trips to hear live music (The Toronto Symphony Orchestra, The Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra, Musicals, concerts and workshops etc.). Student have had the opportunity to participate in workshops at the school with professional musicians & guest conductors (John Johnson, Jerry Legere, Craig Cardiff, Mike Grace, Dylan Maddix, Skye Wallace, Bill Thomas, Peter Stoll, William Prince, etc.).
We have also welcomed performers to provide concerts for our students (Tim Hicks, The Heavy Weights Brass Band, Double Experience, Musicians from Cuba, EnviroDrum, etc.).
Opportunities are provided in our classes for students to work in large & small groups as well as opportunities for solos during musical performances. Additional performance opportunities and musical experiences are frequently provided for our students.
Students from the OSS Music Department Jazz Bands joined students from other local high schools to create an Orillia All Star Jazz Band This is always an amazing experience for our students with the added bonus of working with professionals in the industry.
