Head's Headline
As I sat down to write the Christmas edition, and last Headlines of 2025, the news of the horrific murder of families attending a Hanukkah celebration on Bondi Beach was being reported. Our thoughts go out to all those families and communities ripped apart by this act of terror and to all of our Jewish pupils and families who would have been celebrating Hanukkah. Both Hanukkah and Christmas reference the idea of light in the dark and the hope of faith. I hope in all of your families and communities there is light in the darkness over this festive period, whether or not you have a faith and whatever your faith is.
A central pillar of the Christian faith at this time of year is Joy and rejoicing, and as we enter the final week of term, it is a fitting moment to pause and reflect on the incredible accomplishments of our school community throughout the academic year so far. There is so much to celebrate: from recognising our pupils’ achievements at the annual Speech Day in September, honouring those who serve during our Remembrance assembly, as well as Commemoration Day, to an extensive range of activities including sporting events, theatre trips, residential excursions, student elections and musical performances.
A particular highlight for me has been meeting with all our Year 7 pupils recently to present them with their Headteacher’s Commendations. These visits have been a wonderful opportunity to learn more about each of them, hearing their aspirations for success, what they have enjoyed during their first term at St Clement Danes, and where we can improve.
I would also like to thank those families who have already taken the time to respond to the TEP Family Engagement survey, already 450 responses. The deadline for completing the survey has been extended to the end of today, Friday 19th December. If you have not yet completed the survey, please use this link. Further information regarding the survey can be found in the original letter which was sent out on Thursday 20th November.
Our Year 11 pupils also deserve recognition for their commendable attitude toward their mock examinations. Their hard work and positivity will undoubtedly set them up for success in the Summer final exams.
I am also thrilled to share that St Clement Danes has climbed the rankings in The Sunday Times Best Schools list for 2025. We are now the 4th highest-performing State Secondary School in Hertfordshire, up from 5th place last year, and ranked 112th in the South East out of all schools, including private and selective schools, and 308th nationally amongst all schools combined. This is a tremendous testament to the hard work of our staff and pupils. Congratulations to our entire community on this remarkable achievement.
Earlier this week, our Christmas Concert delighted everyone with stunning musical performances, showcasing the extraordinary talents of our pupils. A special thank you to Mr Butterfield, the Music faculty and all those who helped organise such a magical evening.
Finally, the end of the Autumn Term would not be the same without the SCD tradition of Charities Week. This year’s activities include a Krispy Kreme sale, Christmas Jumper Day, and a lively Pupils vs. Teachers Dodgeball match. The final few days have seen pupils ‘kidnapping’ lessons, visiting Santa’s Grotto, an Elf Auction and various lunchtime competitions. Funds raised will support three exceptional causes, Endometriosis UK, Spread a Smile and Herts Young Homeless.
I would like to extend my thanks to all our parents, both new and longstanding, for your continued support throughout 2025. On behalf of the staff at St Clement Danes, I wish you all a joyful and peaceful Christmas season.

Headteacher, St Clement Danes School
We'd like to close this term and 2025 by acknowledging your generosity and thanking you all for the many ways you support the PA and therefore the school.
It's been an incredible year so far for fundraising, after just one term; not only were Comedy Night and the Winter Market hugely successful but the bar and snack shop at this week's Christmas Concert also raised over £700. We constantly evaluate our prices to ensure we offer parents and students affordable refreshments, always well below commercial prices, while at the same time maximising fundraising. Thank you for your generosity along the way. We'll update you, as ever, next term with which teachers' requests we have been able to fulfill as a result.
Finally, please look out for our email this week with details of our next event, and how to buy early bird tickets. Save the Date for the 14th March for an evening full of fun.
Happy Christmas and all best wishes for 2026.

Last week, we shared the latest edition of the Anchor Fund newsletter, celebrating a significant milestone in our school’s history. If you missed the email or would like to revisit the updates, you can find the full digital page here: The Anchor Fund Newsletter
This issue is a particularly special one as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Anchor Fund. Thanks to the incredible creativity and enthusiasm of our pupils through the ‘£25 for 25 Years’ initiative, we are proud to announce that a total of £12,885.21 was raised, a fantastic achievement that will make an immediate impact on school life.
The page includes details on how your contributions are being put to work, including:
Empowering Pupil Wellbeing: Funding a visit from author Matt Pinkett to discuss masculinity and mental health.
Facility Improvements: Confirmation of long-awaited upgrades to the school bike sheds to promote active travel.
Faculty Support: Providing over £2,000 for Science equipment and RE textbooks, alongside new resources for Creative Arts and Product Design.
We remain deeply grateful for the continued generosity of our community. We hope you enjoy reading about the difference your support makes to the educational experience of every pupil at St Clement Danes.
