I use the Wonders Series to teach my comprehension skills in addition to speaking/listening and writing! We have 10 units with 3 weeks in each unit theme. We will begin the year with Smart Start! We will have a shared reading big book as well as other sources to read. Your child will access these books and other resources with his/her Wonders account.

Guided Reading - Small Group Instruction
In my guided reading small groups, the goal is to build independent readers who can read fluently with comprehension. I use the model created by Jan Richardson, in The Next Step Forward in Guided Reading an 'Assess-Decide-Guide' framework for supporting every reader. It offers three essentials of guided reading in small groups: Instructional-leveled texts, sight words/word study, and developmental writing.
Sight Words - Kindergarten students will learn to READ, WRITE AND SPELL Heart words. You will have a list of these sight words in the binder. Each week, our Wonders reading series will teach a word or two. Sight words are so important to a developing reader - they build confidence and fluency!
We will concentrate on the MASTERY of GREEN, YELLOW, ORANGE, and BLUE of this list! Use the Enrichment words ( pink, black, white, and brown lists) to prepare for first grade.
Over the summer use the pink, black, white and brown list to prepare for First Grade.
Daily MESSAGE - I write a simple message and we read it together. We will circle capital letters, X out the letters that make the sound /t/ like in turtle, teach and underline sight words, count the words and spaces in our sentences AND learn about punctuation. A lot happens in this simple message. 🤩
