Please view these videos, created by our teachers, which describe the various programs at Mission Hill. Then, join us on February 16th for our live Open House Webinar event.
Meet our 6th grade English and History teachers. Most incoming 6th graders have the same teacher for both English and History so these two classes are often referred to as Core. Since 6th graders see their Core teacher every day, Core class operates almost like a homeroom. Our Core teachers are adept at welcoming 6th graders, acclimating them to Mission Hill, and supporting them in building the skills they need to be successful middle school scholars.
Meet the 7th & 8th grade ELA Team. This skillful team has a real passion for teaching adolescents and helping them navigate the challenges of the middle school years. Under their guidance, students will explore various genres of literature, examine real world issues, and grow their skills as readers, writers, speakers, and listeners.
Meet the Mission Hill History Team. Through simulation, role play, and project-based learning, this team makes history come alive for students. Skilled at bringing current events into the classroom, this team gets kids excited about being active and engaged citizens of the modern world.
A strong math program is the heart of any successful middle school. Meet our Math Team and hear how they use a growth mindset approach to quell math anxiety and get students excited about growing as mathematicians, problem-solvers, and collaborators.
Meet our Science Team! Our Science Team uses experiential, inquiry-based learning to encourage students to make sense of the world around them. Lessons are rooted in real world phenomena and students are encouraged to use their critical thinking, inquiry and collaboration skills. We have adopted the SEPUP curriculum from the Lawrence Hall of Sciences which is based on the N.G.S.S. Science and Engineering Practices. In addition to using evidence to develop scientific arguments, students learn how to design solutions for real-life problems, and the importance of being science-literate voters and citizens.
At Mission Hill, our PE program is highly rigorous and based on the California Physical Education standards. In addition to running the mile weekly, students engage in team sports (pickle ball, flag football, basketball, volleyball, etc.), increase their individual athletic skill, build their sportsmanship, and learn the importance of lifelong fitness.
All adolescents need healthy avenues for expressing themselves and what better way to do that than through Music and Art? Meet our VAPA Team and hear all about these electives and the ways that Mission Hill VAPA can tap into your child's inner musician or artist.
AVID is an acronym that stands for Achievement via Individual Determination. Meet our AVID Team and learn all about this elective which can help your child be successful in middle school, high school, and beyond.
Being bilingual is a SUPER POWER! Meet our ELD Teachers whose hard work supports emerging bilingual learners on their journey to becoming super heroes.
Not everyone learns the same way. If your child has learning differences, our Resource Team will be there to support, nurture, and guide their academic and social-emotional growth.
Mission Hill has a robust Electives Program. With options that include World Language, Woodshop, and more, your child will have opportunities to explore a variety of interests during their time at Mission Hill. Take some time to watch the video from Gwen Rendon, our Spanish teacher and hear about what students learn in the Spanish elective class.
Leadership is an elective offered to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders at Mission Hill. It is an opportunity for students to have a voice in planning events and making decisions for the student body at Mission Hill. We focus on skills that help students be great leaders in anything they do such as growth mindset, empathy, leader studies, perseverance, collaboration, digital citizenship, etc. Our goal is to support students in learning to lead by caring for others and the world around them. We hope you will join next year!
