AP Calculus AB is the high school equivalent of a 5 unit college course in calculus. The course is primarily concerned with developing the students’ understanding of the concepts of calculus and providing experience with its methods and applications. The courses emphasize a multi-representational approach to calculus, with concepts, results, and problems being expressed graphically, numerically, analytically, and verbally. The connections among these representations are also important.
We will cover Chapters 1 – 8 of our text, Calculus for AP®, 1st Edition by Ron Larson, Paul Battaglia. Cengage learning. The course covers the material as outlined by the College Board course description.
An important key to your success is putting in the time necessary every day to understand the material. You will have homework every day. In addition to doing the nightly homework, you should re-read your notes each night and pre-read the following day’s lesson. Furthermore, teamwork and team participation play an integral part in your success in this class.
MISTAKES ARE OK, IN FACT THEY ARE A REQUIREMENT FOR LEARNING!!!
Learning and making mistakes are inherently intertwined; you cannot have one without the other (CPM). It is a vital component of my classroom that we have a safe environment where everyone feels comfortable enough to give things a try and make mistakes. I want you to be willing to be supportive and give kind feedback to others! I want you to be willing to be wrong and accept help and corrections from other students, the teacher and yourself without feeling judged or not good enough! It is through this process of attempting problems and stumbling that your brain grows and learning happens!
