The Library Media Center’s function is to support the curriculum with materials appropriate to the subject matter being taught. The purpose of weeding is to remove from the hands of students materials that are outdated, have erroneous information, are in poor condition, old, and smelly. Weeding the unnecessary materials makes it easier for students to find those books that contain accurate, up-to-date information presented in an age appropriate and pleasing format.
Collection development for the GTK8 LMC is done through a variety of resources. Currently, we are growing our graphic novels, updating non-fiction, growing our young adult section, and acquiring more diverse titles.
Ways the collection is developed:
Standard bibliographic tools
Current lists prepared by professional organizations
Special bibliographies for reference books and particular subject lists
Reviews in journals
Materials exhibits
Examination
Media materials purchased using state media funds must directly support the school library media program. Media materials include print, non-print, periodicals, online databases, supplies, and equipment that are critical to the support and enhancement of the Learning Commons program. These materials are housed in and circulated through the library Learning Commons for use by the learning community of the school. Library Media Center equipment purchases may not be housed in a single classroom on a permanent basis.
