During this kick-off symposium, we offered sessions that provided tools to implement inclusive practices and resources on how to engage and support students and families to promote school-based mental health and wellness.

Liz Cruz, LCSW, School Social Worker and Mental Health Consultant at a continuation high school with the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District (SMMUSD), Clinical Supervisor for the Juvenile Diversion Program with the Santa Monica Police Department, and Founder & President of Illuminating SOL Therapy, Inc.
In this workshop, participants will learn specific strategies for effective outreach and engagement when working with youth and families. The workshop will provide tools on how to work with diverse/multicultural families, in a trauma-informed approach, with compassion and humility. By the end of the workshop participants will be knowledgeable on how to build rapport with humility, foster genuine connections, and engage in collaborative skills within the school-community setting.

This is an introductory workshop that explores LGBTQIA+ terms, identities, and common issues faced by students in the school setting. Participants will leave with a better understanding of LGBTQIA+ terms and identities, common issues faced by LGBTQIA+ students in the school system, risk factors specific to LGBTQIA+ students and communities, and how to support LGBTQIA+ students clinically and systemically.
Brianne Baker, LMFT, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
This training will be focused on evidence based practices that help engage clients. Identifying these skills will support effectiveness in treatment as well as initiating the assessment portion of treatment. Objectives include: 1). Will be able to Define Engagement; 2). Will be able to identify 2 parts of the brain that impact stress arousal and engagement; 3). Identify and be able to use 2 environmental changes you can make to increase engagement

This session will provide an introduction to Restorative Practices. Participants will explore the Definition and principles of restorative practices and the Benefits of integrating restorative approaches in behavioral health work. An overview of restorative processes (circles, conferences, etc.) will be shared.
Nakeya T. Fields, LCSW, Mental Health Entrepreneur, Author, Speaker, Motivator, Educator and Advocate
This workshop will provide participants with a foundational understanding of the racially based stressors that might be impacting the student body and subsequently, the school staff. The training facilitator will explore implications for performance and professionalism with boundary setting, use of self and systemic collaboration.
Through an interactive workshop session that supports professional awareness related to the use of self in the work of engaging with the youth, educators, and administrators. The participants and facilitator will connect and allow deeper level exploration of how cultural inclusivity and professional boundary setting can be utilized to empower wellness and more confident clinicians.
