Dr. Jack Naglieri Presents Best Practices in School Psychologist Assessments and Interventions for:
Session 1 (8:30am - 11:30am): Comprehensive Assessment of Executive Function and Instructional Implications
- In this session I will focus on a comprehensive way to assess the concept of Executive Function (EF). We will begin with a short review of the concept and conclude with a view of EF supported by research data from two large nationally representative samples used to norm the Comprehensive Executive Function Inventory (CEFI) and CEFI-Adult. The session will then cover how EF is expressed by measures of intelligence (especially the Cognitive Assessment System Second Edition), rating scales of behaviors, social-emotional competency (e.g. DESSA), and academic achievement (e.g., FAR and FAM) for typical and clinical groups. Emphasis will be placed on interventions that have been shown to increase use of EF and the resulting impact on academic scores
Lunch (11:30am - 12:30pm)
Session 2 (12:30pm - 3:30pm): SLD Eligibility using A Pattern of Strengths and Weaknesses: A Simple Solution
- In this session I will provide a straightforward way school psychologists can use the so called ‘third method’ for SLD eligibility determination to both classify and remediate specific learning disabilities. This will include a brief look at the research on the effectiveness of traditional IQ and second-generation tests for SLD identification and socially just assessment. Emphasis will be placed on a step-by-step analysis illustrated using PASS theory to measure ‘basic psychological processes’ in a manner consistent with California’s current definition of SLD and Dyslexia. Specific cases will be presented to describe how defensible SLD eligibility decisions can be made, and most importantly, how targeted interventions can be generated for instructional planning purposes.
- The primary learning objectives will be:
- Explore the basic neurocognitive processes in the brain that are the foundation of learning and the cause of specific learning disorders in children.
- Introduce the discrepancy-consistency method as an evidence-based means to both identify and remediate language-based learning disorders in children.
- Discuss specific psychological and neuropsychological tests that provide the most comprehensive and efficient means for assessing children with learning disorders and Dyslexia.
