Hello scientists! Thanks for visiting my science page! This year, we will explore many interesting and engaging science topics. Through our curiosity, wonderment, and hunger for knowledge, we'll keep our hands dirty and our minds open to the way the world works! Below you will find an overview of the essential topics we explore in 5th grade.
Unit 1: Engineering - I can define a solution to a problem using the engineer design process.
NGSS Standard: 3-5-ETS1-1 Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.
Unit 2: Matter - I can develop a model that shows the states of matter.
NGSS Standard: 5-PS1-1 Develop a model to describe that matter is made of particles too small to be seen.
Unit 3: Energy and Matter in Organisms - I can interpret a model that shows the path of energy from the sun through an animal’s life cycle.
NGSS Standard: 5-PS3-1 Use models to describe that energy in animals' food (used for body repair, growth, motion, and to maintain body warmth) was once energy from the sun.
Unit 4: Energy and Matter in Ecosystems - Develops a model that describes the movement of matter among organisms in the environment.
NGSS Standard: 5-LS2-1 Develop a model to describe the movement of matter among plants, animals, decomposers, and the environment.
Unit 5: Systems in Space - I can interpret data to explain how patterns in our solar system work.
NGSS Standard: 5-ESS1-2 Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearances of some stars in the night sky.
Unit 6: Earth’s Systems - I can develop a model to show how Earth’s four spheres interact.
NGSS Standard: 5-ESS2-1 Develop a model using an example to describe ways the geosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere, and/or atmosphere interact.
Unit 7: Earth and Human Activities - I can explain how how communities use science to protect the Earth’s resources and environment.
NGSS Standard: 5-ESS3-1 Obtain and combine information about ways individual communities use science ideas to protect the Earth's resources and environment.
