Gender Identity
Every student deserves to learn in a safe and supportive setting, free from discrimination. As the Department of Education has reaffirmed, discrimination based on sex—including sexual orientation and gender identity—isn't just wrong, it's prohibited in America's schools.
Senate File 496 speaks to the communication efforts and partnership between schools and parents. This legislation speaks to reaffirm and strengthen this mutual trust and understanding while maintining what is perceived to be in the best interest of the educated child. For this reason SF 496 does the following:
Prohibits a school district from knowingly providing false or misleading information to a parent or guardian regarding a student’s gender identity or intention to transition to a gender other than that specified on the student’s birth certificate.
Requires that a parent or guardian be informed if a student requests an accommodation intended to affirm a gender identity other than that assigned to the student on the school district’s registration forms or records.
The following policies have been adopted at SCC in conjunction with Iowa law as a means to both inform parents and to provide more clarity around how employees are to handle individual student needs.
