All students at Park Forest Middle and Mt. Nittany Middle Schools receive General Music education at their grade levels. These courses focus on instrument playing and singing , as well as music reading and writing, music history, and many other music topics. Students who are interested in performing music are provided with a sequential program of music courses in band, choir, and orchestra. Students may enter the sequence at any grade. Select groups, such as select choir, symphonic band, and jazz band, are available to challenge those students with more advanced abilities and who are members of the core ensembles for their grades. Delta MS is a different and separate middle school music program. Please see the Delta Website and Ms. Leah Mueller for the current music offerings.
Can I take Band, Choir, AND Orchestra?
Yes! It is possible for students to participate in band, choir, and orchestra in ALL grades. Students can take one, two, or all of the grade-level music ensemble courses.
May I join a choir even if I didn't take choir in elementary school?
Absolutely!!! Students may join choir without having previous experience
Do I have to audition to take 6th , 7th, or 8th grade band, choir, or orchestra?
No, students do NOT need to audition to be in the grade-level music ensembles. If you do not already play a band or orchestra instrument you will need to specifically discuss this with the teacher BEFORE enrolling
May I start an instrument in middle school?
The answer is "yes"! Because of this past year of living in a pandemic, we will be taking beginners in grade 6th. You will need to talk to the director of the band or orchestra. Some factors that will be considered in group lesson placement is if you already are skilled at reading music or playing another instrument.
Are there any select ensembles for students?
Yes. Both MNMS and PFMS music programs offer co-curricular ensembles such as select choirs, and symphonic and jazz bands.
May I take courses at both Delta and MNMS or PFMS?
Delta Middle School offers their own music courses within their own scheduling matrix. Students in middle school cannot be enrolled in courses in both Delta MS and MNMS or PFMS.
