Fashion Illustration I - Spring 2022

Fashion Illustration I

The art department at SHS was contacted by Junk Kouture, an organization that began in Ireland and whose participation has grown to a global platform. Junk Kouture is a fashion competition that is all about using recycled materials – challenging young people to design, create, and model high-end couture from everyday junk. It takes in elements of fashion, design, engineering, and environmental sustainability, transforming these into a creative contest. Junk Kouture’s requirements aligned perfectly with the Fashion curriculum here at SHS, so it was a good fit. This also gave us the opportunity to learn how to use recycled materials to create original designs. The students learned what it was like to work within a team, create fashion wear, and submit their final pieces to Junk Kouture’s global fashion show, which was an optional component of the class. The current display in the Positive Space Gallery are examples of last spring's designs.

Fashion Illustration Two Repurposed Fashions

In keeping with the current fashion trends focusing on sustainable fashion, repurposing, and a Do It Yourself (DIY) handmade aesthetic, students began with garments that they no longer wore and created new wearable fashions with the addition of hand-painted, hand-sewn, embroidered, patchwork, and applique elements.
