Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion:
Planning for 2021 and Beyond
On May 10, 2021, Drs. Hagerman and McIntosh presented the Board of Education with the updated Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Plan for 2021.
2021-22 Planning
(adapted from the above remarks)
Our goal is to be intentional and clear in our process:
We start with developing a wide understanding of our guiding framework NYSCR-S Frameworks--and to uncover misunderstandings about the framework--including that a framework is not a curriculum, but rather provides a critical lens through which we examine our practices, resources, and scope to inform its inclusivity and enrichment.
We will ensure the entire school community has access to and understands the NYSCR-S Frameworks and its 4 primary principles.
We also will:
Use BOE #0105 Policy to guide goal-setting and priorities
As described, our compact committee will implement the goals within their charge.
Implement Compact Committee goals
This is a year in which we look at both our curriculum content and professional development resources through The Lens of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. This is a year of thoughtful research and which will inform the design and implementation of District wide professional learning.
Importantly, we will:
Integrate into Strategic Plan and Set Long Term Goals (2022-25)
We have been engaged in this work for many years, even decades. Our research & development have involved meaningful work with
Scarsdale Teachers Institute working on DEI (since its inception in 1967).
East/West Center: an education and research organization established by the U.S. Congress in 1960 to strengthen relations and understanding among the peoples and nations of Asia, the Pacific, and the United States.
Interdependence Institute which supports and celebrates much of this work.
Global Learning Alliance: Scarsdale is a founding member with partner schools in Finland and Singapore- originally established as a benchmarking alliance to identify and study educational practices of excellence. Each member comes from high achieving Districts/Schools with Teaching University Partnerships. *Scarsdale is partnered with Columbia University’s Teachers College through the Center for Professional Education of Teachers.
Teacher Grants have supported innovation in this area.
Study Abroad Programs with a goal of “GLOBAL for all” whether service-learning, language acquisitions, homestays, and/or performance experiences. We look forward to continuing this as safety allows.

And The Global Learning Alliance
In April, Scarsdale had the pleasure of facilitating a GLA virtual summit with our university partners: This year we welcomed international participants from Turkey and South Africa.
At the center was a Student Research Project: After choosing and sharing texts on the theme of belonging from their native countries students from founding districts worked in small internationally diverse teams to research and present on currently marginalized groups of people. Five presentations were given to the GLA participants and students were asked questions about their process and their findings.
The teachers involved in the student research projects are Heather Waters (Scarsdale HS), Liew Pei Li (Hwa Chong Institute), and Taneli Nordberg (Helsingin Normaalilyseo).
The entire virtual summit was over three days.
On the first day, the educators talked through the three stories chosen by our students. connected by the theme of Belonging and Identity and considered key quotes and passages.
The second day was dedicated to the project described.
And on the final day the GLA Board took time to connect about our experiences in education across five different countries. We identified 4 areas we want to focus on: Planning a Student Project for 2021-2022; Research Study on the 2021 Student Project; Newsletter - ongoing collaborations and updates; and Planning a Global Education Online Course.
