Special Topics in Childhood Studies

PRELIMINARY COURSE DESCRIPTION
This class will investigate the topic of plastic in contemporary society, with special focus on the intersections between plastic and childhood. We will critically examine media for and about children that explores various relationships that children and other living beings have with plastic, including film, animation, picture books, and curricular/instructional materials. We will think about plastic's intersections with discourses of toxicity, land and water pollution, artistic practice, and relationships among humans and non-human entities. The class will involve critical reading and writing skills, creativity, and an open-mindedness to play and experimentation.
ASSIGNMENTS
Assignments will include a mixture of traditional assessments (content comprehension) and creative projects. The class will require close reading skills, writing, and photography. There will be optional (but not required) opportunities to work in drawn or stop-motion animation, podcast, and/or video production, according to your interests. Some assignment examples include:
Weekly group photo journal (small group discussion)
Weekly reading/viewing quiz
Curriculum review
Picture book analysis
Image/Video annotation
Final Project (choice of formats - creative or paper)
