The official basic rules for D&D consists of 15 chapters of content breaking down the various rules and information regarding character creation, role play, combat, spellcasting and even Dungeon Master (DM) exclusive rules for the storyteller of the game. While long, it is also very comprehensive and will provide you with all that you need to know to start playing. However I aim to provide a shorter and more general overview of the rules to get a someone started as the finer details can be worked out as you go. All those rules can be intimidating at first, but genuinely the best way to learn how to play D&D is to just starting play it and learn as you go! It's how I learned and I found it to be way more fun than just sitting down to read all of the rules.
