Context is the Mother of Everything
Rutgers Equity Alliance for Community Health (REACH) funded a seed research grant to pilot-test approaches to developing community-participatory food justice movements. This seven-phase project culminated in a photovoice exhibit in the community.
The goals of the photovoice project were to:
1) Collect photographic data about the local food environment in Newark, NJ, from the perspective of mothers with pre-school-age children. We wanted community members' assessments.
2) Facilitate the mother's ability to document and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the local food environment.
3) To increase participants' awareness and critical consciousness about the food environment.
4) To create community advocacy and policy change opportunities.
All of our goals were achieved. The project resulted in a photovoice exhibit to disseminate findings in the community and manuscripts submitted to health journals under review.
