Example tutorial of a simple inclusive chart created in Tableau
I created a sample visualization to show simple accessibility features and design principles that can be implemented in Tableau. This data comes from the IAPB Vision Atlas which publishes data and visualizations concerning global inequalities in visual health and access to care.
The accessible information visualization design principles that I used include:
Adjusting text color and size to maximize contrast and readability
Using a "color-blind friendly" color palette
Ensuring that color-encoded data was also directly labeled on scroll-over so that viewers don't have to rely on color alone
Adding a high-contrast border between colors in the stacked bars
Having detailed, meaningful and clear axis labels, legend label, and title
Adding a caption that explained the message conveyed by the data
Including alt-text that captured what the data showed, what type of plot was used, important data points, and instructions for accessing data table
I believe these design choices improved the overall inclusivity of the visualization and they were simple and easy to implement. I hope this serves as an example for other designers who want to include accessibility standards in their designs.
