Nitazenes are a class of synthetic opioids more potent than fentanyl, making them extremely dangerous. They have been increasingly detected in the drug supply, often without users knowing, which raises the risk of overdose.
A CDC study highlights the increasing role of illicitly manufactured fentanyls (IMFs) in overdose deaths, often mixed with stimulants. Additionally, nitazene opioids, a class of highly potent synthetic opioids, are emerging as a serious concern.
Nitazene Concern: Though still rare, nitazenes—synthetic opioids more potent than fentanyl—were detected in an increasing number of overdose cases.
Prevention Needs: The report emphasizes:
Expanding harm reduction efforts, including naloxone distribution.
Enhancing public awareness of the risks of nitazenes and fentanyl.
Improving access to substance use disorder treatment.
