AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is an elective class designed for students who aspire to attend four-year colleges and universities. To be eligible, students must demonstrate satisfactory citizenship, good attendance, and maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Most importantly, applicants should be motivated to work toward college readiness and success.
At La Colina, our goal is to equip students with the skills and support they need to excel in junior high and prepare for college-preparatory and Advanced Placement high school courses. AVID provides structured academic support through a dedicated elective teacher, an AVID coordinator, and a school site team. Together, we help students—especially those who may not otherwise have the resources or guidance—navigate the path to higher education.
The AVID elective is built around the WICOR curriculum, which integrates Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading to enhance students’ academic skills. (See the infographic above for more details on how WICOR is incorporated into the AVID experience.)
Beyond academics, AVID students participate in field trips to college campuses and museums, and learn from guest speakers, providing them with firsthand exposure to higher education and enrichment opportunities. These experiences help broaden their perspectives, inspire their ambitions, and reinforce the importance of lifelong learning.
Beyond academics, AVID fosters a strong sense of community. Students in the program develop lasting friendships, take pride in their school, and serve as role models among their peers. By building confidence, providing opportunities, and instilling essential skills, the AVID elective empowers students to achieve their college and career goals.
