1.) Using the ABC-Clio World History: Modern Era database, look up the article on totalitarianism. What is a totalitarianist government?
2.) In the recent dystopian title the Hunger Games, the competition is captured and televised by an infinite number of cameras. Read the following article, identify one new method of surveillance in place in New York City. How does this new technology relate to dystopian fiction like the Hunger Games trilogy and 1984?

3.) The preface of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights describes a “common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations, to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction.” Examine the articles of the Declaration of Human Rights at http://www.un.org/en/documents/udhr/. Select one article and relate it to the policies noted in Orwell’s 1984.

5.) The America Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a watchdog group whose mission is to protect American freedoms. Examine the ACLU’s Key Issues https://www.aclu.org/key-issues. Select an issue related to individual expression and freedom. On the selected issue, how does the U.S. government’s position relate to the restrictions placed on citizens in Orwell’s 1984? What comparisons can you make?
6.) Read this article on Human Rights Watch http://www.hrw.org/news/2014/01/13/syria-extremists-restricting-women-s-rights. Describe threeways that the civil liberties of women are limited in Syria under the rule of Jabhat al-Nusra and the Islamic State of Iraq and Sham (ISIS)?
