VTN was founded in January of 1997, and was originally just named SBPS TV 28. This channel was originally planned to be the districts local access channel, but when the new high school was built, it was decided to integrate it into the high school.
The show "Tea Time" was focused on informing students and parents on current events around the school
As part of this new expansion, VTN was given a television class in C211, allowing students to produce a 5 minute program each morning. Every production made was broadcasted live every morning on channel 37, and locally in the school. VTN was also given a club, accordingly called Club VTN.
VTN was changed to channel 28, and moved from C211 to C104, where it now resides today. During the 1999-2000 school year, VTN grew significantly with its coverage of school events and entertainment segments.
In 2000, VTN grew once again with new equipment. Throughout the year, students explored new ways to make the broadcast interesting.
In 2001, Club VTN members worked together to create a sports broadcast called The Show. This production covered after school sports events and sports news around the world.
In 2005, VTN received a brand new set and equipment u upgrade. Some of the additions included a Sony AG-MX70 switcher and DV Capture system. Allowing students to think of creative ways to continue the broadcast.
In 2006, a new television program called Making The Grade was founded, this new show centered on detailed issues around the school. Included with the new show, was the renovation of room C106 to become the Studio Production room.
In 2011, the S.B. Education Foundation funded a major equipment upgrade for VTN. This included the addition of the Newtek Tricaster. This greatly streamlined the production process, as previously, the production loop was completely analog. All videos had to be played in real time.
For the 2018 school year, the decision was made to provide the school a greater online presence via it's own YouTube channel. This would become the preferred medium going forward, allowing students and parents to easily stay up to date with the school.
2022 marked a significant update for VTN. Included was the addition of a new Tricaster. Allowing for resolutions as high as 4K. For the start of the 2022-2023 school year, the VTN set received a fresh coat of paint. Along with this, a brand new VTN program, The Viking Minute, was introduced. With it's first episode premiering on September 14th, 2022.
