A Look at Our Learning
Reading & Writing Workshop –
Our last units in reading and writing partner as we study fairy tales. We will travel to a world of fairy tales focusing on story elements, character development, theme, and morals, as well as use inferencing skills to grow theories about characters. This work will prepare us for our partnering writing unit. In our writing unit, students will develop their own version of a fractured fairytale. They will apply all that we know about fairytale craft to create their own version of a popular fairytale. In addition, we will look at popular fairy tales from different cultures to compare, contrast, and analyze story elements.
Mathematics –
We will continue our learning about multiplication and division to solve basic word problems. Students will develop strategies to solve multiplication (2-digit by 1-digit) and division (2 or 3 digit divided by 1-digit) problems. We will also learn strategies to solve Multi-Step problems. Our final unit in math will be all about data analysis. This unit focuses on using bar graphs, pictographs, and line plots to represent, describe, and compare categorical and numerical data. Students also generate measurement data in inches, half inches, feet, and yards.
Science - Weather & Climate
We will continue our investigations into weather and climate into May. Students are using all their knowledge to research an extreme weather storm and create a slideshow to teach the class.
Social Studies:
Our final unit is titled Natural Resources of the US. Students will examine the question, how should we use the natural resources of the United States? Each region of the United States is unique; together, they provide people with the different resources they need to survive. In this Inquiry, students explore the rich natural resources across the US, how people use them, and the ways everyone can help sustain them. Then, they consider how to take action in their community to promote sustainable use of our natural resources.
