A Look at Our Learning
Reading: Character Studies
In this unit, students are learning how to analyze characters in fiction texts. Using the novel Because of Winn‑Dixie as a whole class, we are studying all the key story elements and the structure of a narrative. Students are then applying these skills independently in their own reading. They have practiced making claims and supporting them with textual evidence. These skills will help them become more independent readers who read for understanding. Throughout the unit, students read closely, took notes, and focused on identifying character traits, story elements, themes, and the problems and solutions presented in their books.
Writer’s Workshop: Baby Literary Essays
In this unit, students are learning to state a clear opinion, claim, or thesis about a story or nonfiction text and support it with evidence. They are learning to craft a complete essay and organize their writing into well‑structured paragraphs. The unit emphasizes the importance of including a strong introduction and conclusion, and students are practicing revising and editing for clarity and coherence. Additionally, they are learning to use transitional words and phrases to effectively introduce their evidence.
Mathematics – How Many Miles
In this unit, students will learn to:
identify shapes based on their relevant attributes and sort shapes into categories based on their attributes
justify why a shape belongs in a category
measure area by counting unit squares
compute area by multiplying given side lengths
measure the area of an irregular shape by counting unit squares including decomposing and composing partial square units as needed.
Social Studies - In social studies, we completed the unit “How to Be a Global Citizen.” We have now started our science unit on weather and climate.
